    • Synopsis
    • Shin-ichi is a high school kid who loses the use of his right arm when it gets taken over by a Parasyte. The Parasytes are parasitic beings created by the earth itself as an act of self-defense.
Shinichi's sharer is known as Migi, and the bizarre friendship between these two unlikely allies and their struggles against the unremitting savagery of other Parasytes is the subject of the manga serialized in the magazine "Gekkan Afternoon" (Kodansha Publishing) between 1990 and 1995.
The unusual concept, powerful storytelling, philosophical world view and fascinating characterizations ensure that the manga achieved wide acclaim and has continued to be talked about years after its debut.
With its superb blend of drama and action, it has long been an influential work for such filmmakers as James Cameron ("Terminator 2") and its prescient treatment of themes like environmental degradation and family dissolution means that 17 years after its first publication, it has left its mark on the history of manga storytelling.
Such was its appeal overseas that rights to the project were long held by a Hollywood production company. During this entire time, Japanese filmmakers yearned to make the movie and its inaccessibility bolstered its legendary reputation. When the Hollywood rights became freed up last year, there was a frantic response from the Japanese film world. The ensuing bidding war between numerous studios, directors and production companies resulted in the venerable studio, Toho Co., Ltd.. securing the honored chance to adapt the manga for the screen.
This project is the result. The very best of Japanese creative talents will come together around the best possible screenplay to create the best possible visuals and the best possible sound design in an adaptation that will more than do justice to the original masterpiece. The aim is to capture the intense thrill of such movies as “Confessions”, "Seven" and "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo".
During the last 10 years, as the Japanese film market has matured, so too have filmmakers' skills developed. We're now at a point, unthinkable when the manga was first published, where a worthy adaptation is clearly within reach.
Utilizing the unique power of Toho's nationwide distribution net and calling on the unique skills of our best filmmakers, filled with love and respect for the original work, we aim for a film that will delight fans and pull in a new generation of teenagers and young adults to the superb story that is "Parasyte".
