Édouard, a worker and union leader worn out by years of struggle, is abandoned by his own people as he ratifies the factory's restructuring plan. To earn extra money, he and a group of workers stole steel from the factory for Flemish fences. But with the announcement of the dismantling, the gang's claims become unrealistic. Edouard is cornered and calls his daughter Lorene for help. The woman who built a career in Luxembourg by denying everything about her origins returns to the family home. But she remains insensitive to Edouard's homeric ramblings about moving the steel to a factory in the East. And his desire for one last revolt pushes him instead to steal all the steel from the factory and sell it. With four workers, Lorene and Fred, his first love became Edouard’s adopted stepson take the opportunity of a demonstration to load tons of steel onto a barge. But Édouard he is ahead of everyone else: he runs away with the barge on the canal to get to the rendezvous alone. The group arrives too late, Edouard has been blew up with the Flemings. The barge remains intact amidst the debris of the explosion.
Desperate, Lorene, Fred and the four workers hasn’t others choice to escape on the boat and let themselves be carried by the river. Without knowing it, they are in the process of embarking on Edouard's chimerical epic in search of his fantastic, liberated, self-managed factory.
They embark on a particular odyssey that takes them through new territories, subject to native covetousness, subject to hunger, subject to the desire to give up. And they will not find the factory where steel turns to gold, but rather a place where Edward's legacy would weigh more than those tons of steel in the hold.
