    • Rafael Padilla, aka Chocolat, was born in Cuba in 1860. He was the first black artist to appear on a French stage, and he and the clown Footit were the first to create a duo between a whiteface clown and a black Auguste.He was the perfect product of his times and the darling of Montmartre. He inspired Toulouse Lautrec and appeared in the first films of the Lumiere brothers. He was also the first artist to appear in advertising.
