    • Carved by the Wind tells the story of Sophia, a young Moroccan photographer, who finds the key to her wholeness by uncovering and reconciling the dark secret of her past. At the same time, Carved by the Wind is a portrait of the complex personal and cultural bonds that link Morocco and France. It is inspired from real stories that happened between 1960 and 1990 in France ,in some European countries that witnessed massive immigration from the Maghreb.

The day to day work in her father Adam’s Tangier photo studio gives Sophia stability, but has frustrated her desire to find her own artistic style and her own path in life. That all changes when, after a break-in at the studio, Sophia discovers a letter from the French mother Adam had told her died when she was a baby.

Sophia is faced with some urgent questions . Confronting Adam with the letter brings no relief: it provokes in Adam such grief and pain that he retreats into himself, disrupting his relationship with Sophia’s stepmother Kenza.

Armed with the letter, Sophia takes the bold step of selling one of her cameras to finance a trip to Bordeaux in France. But to her dismay, when she summons the courage to ring her mother ELYN’s doorbell, ELYN shuts the door in her face. The shock is great for both of them.

Sophia’s only resource during her few days in Bordeaux is Rayan, a Syrian refugee , theater director preparing a performance in the center where Elyn works. Rayan is able to offer Sophia not only empathy, but a way to grow through the shocks and trials, as Sophia continues to pursue contact with Elyn only to be turned away again. The wounds of Adam and Elyn’s shared past are deeper than Sophia can fathom.

Blocked in her goal to know her mother, but supported by Rayan’s friendship, Sophia returns to Tangier to find Adam and Kenza’s marriage at a breaking point. Whatever the secret is, it is still too dark and hard for Adam to reveal. But at this point Elon suddenly arrives in Tangier, moved by Sophia’s courage and determined to open herself to her daughter.

Sophia realizes that the only way to heal herself and her family is to bring the full secret out in the open. With Kenza’s help, she brings Adam and Elyn together for the first time in over 25 years. Each character is challenged to overcome cherished defenses and old egoisms, to risk, to face the darkness, and to try to forgive. The climax is unpredictable, with no guarantee of a soft landing.

Through her quest to find the lost pieces of herself, Sophia explores the meaning of ‘identity’, ‘belonging’, ‘mourning’, and ‘love’. How is it possible to build bridges of reconciliation and transcend the wounds of the past, together with differences of culture and perspective?
