- In 1939, Joel and Jana escape from their village because of the arrival of the Nazis. Little do they know that this decision would make them the only ones in their family to survive the Holocaust. Years later, they have a son, my father. They nickname him Hemshej, a word that means continuity. 80 years later, I begin to suspect that there is a part of my story that was left out. I decide to retrace my grandparents' steps to understand what is behind my father's silence.
