    • Synopsis
    • Balkanica is an emotional journey in time, across the territory of the Ex Yugoslavia.
It tells the story of a war photographer who decides to go back to the Balkan Peninsula, to the places where she spent time during the decade of the conflict.
Over the course of this new journey she recollects fragments of her memory, watching photos and videos of that period, using found footage as a map to orientate herself through the past. During the trip she goes back to the
places and people she met more than 20 years ago. This is the starting point for a reflection on the function of memory, especially on the need to re-cord our memories.
The film is structured around two converging narrative plans.
      1. Documentary: the people and places shown through images shot during the author’s trips between 1994 and 2009. Photographs and videos, in different formats (Super 8, Hi8, 16mm, miniDV, HdV, Red), show various situations of life and event.
      2. Fiction: our main character, the war photographer, doesn’t appear on screen but we can hear her thoughts through a voice over that guides the whole narration.
The action takes place in Belgrade, Sarajevo, Pristina and a Serbian enclave in Kosovo, but these places are never specifically mentioned. Instead, the naming of places and events remains intentionally abstract: we are not talking about that
specific war, but we are talking about The War.
