    • Synopsis
    • A Banquet for Hungry Ghosts blends Chinese customs, culture and cuisine into 10 exhilarating horror stories that journey through time - from the building of the Great Wall in 200 BC to 80s Chinatown in New York City. Based on the best-selling book of the same title by chef and author Ying Chang Compestine.

The self-contained stories all take place during the Hungry Ghost Festival as per Chinese tradition - when the gates of Hell open for one lunisolar month and ghosts roam the earthly realm. Among them are those who died prematurely or unjustly, and spirits who are lost. These ghosts are hungry, both metaphorically and figuratively, and it is the living’s responsibility to feed them with delicious treats and to keep them entertained. Beware a ghost who is left unsatisfied!

We tell our stories as a 10-course set menu - a true feast for the eyes and the mind, and like our favorite Chinese dishes, the core ingredients stay the same, but the recipe and method varies subtly from one story to the next.

      The dishes (and episodes):
      Egg Fried Rice
      Sweet and Sour Pork
      Kung Pao Chicken
      Hot Pot
      Steamed dumplings
      Cold Platter
      Peking Duck
      Dim Sum
      Long Life Noodles
      Glutinous Rice Balls

The banquet is a metaphor for how our folklore has traveled around the globe with our ancestors, grounded itself in new and surprising places and taken root in the popular imagination. Our exquisite dishes come along with generous chunks of terror, splashes of comedy and a pinch of social commentary, created by some of the most exciting indie animation studios from around the world.
